Rarely given, typically only in Asia. When given typically
only to tulkus and lineage-holders. Not done lightly,
there are very serious practice commitments.

Major lineahge holders like Minling Trichen or Penor
Rinpoche will only give it one or two times during their
lifetime. It takes more than 3 months of all day back to back
    empowerments.

It was given in Maryland in the late 80's by Penor Rinpoche when Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo (tulku) was enthroned.

The books are cheap compared to having to deal with a teacher's fickle samaya.

hey Nyonpa, where do you suggest I look for a practice text? I tried to find it at your link above but they do not have it. It is: "Swift Salvation" (Phowa practice) by Ven. Sogan Rinpoche, Pema Lodoe

Have you tried asking his facebook profile?
It seems to be a very limited publication. Traga rinpoche has cd for sale by the same name.
I wish I had fickle samaya...... It would be a great relief to shed this whole tibetan buddhist rubbish in a language I can't understand that is easily misunderstood and very much shamelessly bullies your time.

Dealing with one's own fickle samaya is generally more palatable, eh? (wink)

Interdependence.... sucks and blows at same time.
It is ALSO fault of guru.
But..... my faults are all I can do anything about (maybe)
            :-) (wink-wink)

          Ha! Very funny!

Sure you can buy the pechas, but you'd have
to be able to read classical Tibetan and be
able to interpret all the idioms. Who here knows
just how subtle and complex Tibetan idiom is?

Then, without the wang, lung and tri, it'd be as if you
installed a great electrical system in your house but
failed to connect to the mains. Further, maybe you
didn't sign up for an account with the company
that includes paying the bill regularly! (samaya
          and practice commitments)

            Ha! Yes futile but.....
It is such a funny joke that even the Dali Lama used it saying his guru was wrong about some things like dorje shugden.
I wish less hypocrisy and more room for not being in denial of bigwig mistakes cuddled as stainless ambrosia or viewed as deserved as one's destiny of karma that can not be changed.

Buddha said authority is one's own mind to test for truth.
Is bodhicitta giving away everything including one's mind?!
Concepts are not just to be ignored as empty thoughts, there is some interdependence causing them even though they are created by one's own mind.

Frankly? I've never really understood "the issue", after all, it is clearly set forth that one should determine for oneself what is, what to do, what seems reasonable, et al.

A commitment to another, regardless the relationship, does not usurp this, if anything, it provides the vehicle by which to more deeply develop it in a context of compassionate, mutual devotion.

More succinctly, just because your lama says, "Jump off that cliff..." doesn't mean you should, and last I heard, blind faith or obedience is not the point.... one's successful navigation of one's path is.... correct?

I think that sounds right Bonnie but in tibetan buddhism blind faith seems to be demanded.... Your guru is supposed to be viewed as the buddha who can do no wrong and MUST be obeyed. Many many things are contradictory in tibetan buddhism and instead of considering possibility of mistakes they are quickly deflected and labeled as skillful means for a particular audience.

I hear that this is what you believe, but it is not what I, as a Tibetan Buddhist experience. Then again, I was told by the lama to which I felt drawn that having a root lama is not a necessity; so perhaps there are many debates and misunderstandings or maybe it's all just appearance play and ultimate benefit is the thing we choose for ourselves; all choices being directed by us, for us, does it not all benefit, eventually?

Of course my perspectives are helpful to no one else and only rarely helpful even to me, so I am sure I have it all wrong.

Of course the crux of the matter is what vehicle one follows.
One doesn't blindly follow, one does use both kinds of reason--
inference and direct perception. To my knowledge, only Je
Tsongkhapa has the chutzpa to say that "all" scripture (ie. sutra)
is valid on the basis of being an inference. In sutra you do not need
a root lama-- spiritual friend will suffice

Now in vajrayana, you question until you enter formal practice
at which point you cultivate 'unreversible' faith. You take up
to 12 years before making a final commitment. I don't thnk
we date potential lovers that long before marriage! But the pursuit
of Buddhahood is far more important and demaniding.

                    Don't you think?

Bonnie: It is not necessarily what I believe, it is only what I was taught.... there are indeed many debates and misunderstandings in tibetan buddhism. Wrong or right I dunno but I have often found your perspective very nice and helpful.

Mark: Well I suppose I am going to vajra hell because I was inducted into formal practice everyday for well over a year and then stopped because my guru essentially told me to leave and I followed his command obediently. And I have judged him very harshly in my mind for that lack of care or skill or wisdom or compassion with our very dedicated samaya.

I sincerely ask you geshe Mark what do I do to fix this?
Not this life I don't think can fix! Guru yoga is seemingly permanently heavily defecated in my mind.
I have even reverted back to my old very unenlightened habits like I had never practiced before....... it is even worse now actually because nothing else will grab my devotion like that ever again and I am now very allergic! The precious gold of dharma clenched in my fist has quickly turned into doo-doo in my open hand turned upside down in aversion.
Everything I have loved has literally turned into doo-doo.
I truly understand why most beings in six realms reside in hell realm.

I think we say "already in hell," no reason to worry about going there...

i've said several times that the guru-disciple relationship is one
of mutual trust, otherwise it's not really what the vajrayana has in ind.

The only solution i know of is confession and vajrasattva.
Prostrations will also help, because we all have misdeeds
of body speech and mind. Mind or speech purification isn't
quite enough. Prostration is part of all traditions of Buddhism,
all vehicles. More extensively one could recite the Immaculate
Purification Tantra, if the wanted to. That would be great.

Plan on more that 100 dor sem a day and compleiting
more that 100,000. This is the advice of all traditions,
but is especially mentioned in Kunzang Lamai Shaylung
                      by Patrul Rinpoche.

It is being planned for October 2010 to January 2011, at Orgyen Dorje Den in Alameda, California. It will be given by The Venerable Yangthang Tulku Rinpoche at the request of the Venerable Gyatrul Rinpoche.

Yangthang Tulku Rinpoche is an emanation of the great Vimalamitra and the immediate reincarnation of the Terton Dorje Dechen Lingpa. Rinpoche is a main lineage holder in the Nyingma Tradition and one of the most highly respected Buddhist teachers in the world today. Gyatrul Rinpoche says that …“Yangthang Rinpoche is truly a precious jewel.”

The Rinchen Terzod, the Treasury of Precious Termas, was compiled by Jamgon Kongtrul the Great with the blessings of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo and Chogyur Lingpa. The precious collection includes many of the major termas that had been discovered before 1889 and is extensive. It will take over three months to confer the entire cycle of hundreds of empowerments.
