Recently K mentions that some yidam transmissions automatically give permissions for other yidams without recieving transmission. Is this true for all the lineages?

Re: One transmission for many empowerments?
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 12:01 PMFor instance, I have heard in past that transmission of highest yoga tantra means permissions for all lower yoga tantras. But I never asked a rinpoche whether or not this is true. -

He is in deep retreat. I hope he is well. Sorry for being off-topic.
I am so short on dharma knowledge, if it could sit on a dime, its legs would dangle.

Re: One transmission for many empowerments?
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 5:46 AMBeing short of dharma knowledge is not a bad thing at all...there are so many who's cups are full and have no room to really learn anything.
Regarding transmission, there are some transmissions that contain whole cyles of teachings. traditionally the master will give transmission (lung) for a particular teaching by verbally reciting the Tibetan text of the teaching in the presence of the student. This recitation is typically done after detailed instructions have been given; for example, at the close of a retreat. By receiving the transmission, a student is empowered to study and practice the teachings on his or her own.
However, transmission is not limited to a lung. the lung is the reading transmission but there is also empowerment.
Transmitting means passing on the tantric teachings, which are original tantric texts. These texts include descriptions of unique tantric practices, methods of practising tantra, and explanations of attainments reached when the practices are completed.
The Yidam is the meditational deity. It is an aspect of the Buddha, and of the lama. Tranmission by empowerment is a means to ripen the disciple's mind for the practice. During an empowerment, the master takes the form of the yidam, and brings the disciple into the his mandala where he/she confers the initiation upon them.
After receiving the initiation, the disciple is allowed to practise the tantra of the yidam whose initiation he or she has received.
The same yidam or diety can take several forms also and may have more than one practice associated with it....i.e. peaceful, blissful, or wrathful.
Mark is practicing for us all :)

Re: One transmission for many empowerments?
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 8:15 AMThanks Bill glad you are here,
I love it when the tibetan rinpoches give lungs! They read aloud so fast! They only stop once in a while to suck in their spit quickly! They must have known that I was lazy, the only requirements in like five transmissions was for me "to be more mindful". Haha.
At the very end I want to yell Sold! Because it is like a tibetan auction. During the last "transmission" I was attacked by the giggles so bad I had to gag myself and become a silent person turning red and having a mal-siezure! The fellow next to me obviously didn't know tibetan and was loudly saying the prayers wrong sounding like someone hurting themselves and screaming curse words in fake chinese. Most difficult transmission I had ever been through!
Also I was wondering how long do "blessing pills" last? I have some that are going on two years old. I don't even know what they are made of. They taste like funky raw incense that sucks up all your spit and leaves your mouth chalky. -

Re: One transmission for many empowerments?
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 2:29 PMI have blessing pills that were blessed by HH 16th Karmapa...and they contain some relic substances that are probably very old, but I do keep them in a little tupperware in my shrine.."locks in the freshness you know".
I think Blessing Pills would be a great subject for a discussion though because of their prominence in Tibetan schools of Buddhism. -

Blessing Pills
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 3:16 PMYes what on earth is in these blessing pills? Wow man you must have gotten those blessing pills from someone very special! You say relic substances? Sarrira? Do they put mummy dust in them? I might keep mine locked away too now instead of drinking them like kool-aid! I can definately feel a "blessing" charged on me when I take them! One other thing, the last time I saw a rinpoche he blew on the top of my head really hard for a long time! What is that all about? I was told it was blessings but he didn't do it to anyone else when he touched foreheads. Maybe he knew it would be the last time I would see him. He gave me the whole sack of blessing pills after he only gave little pill bags to other folks. I was like wow man thanks for the FAT sack!

Re: One transmission for many empowerments?
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 3:28 PMYes, please do! I've received two different types of pills. And I put together from different Rinpoche's.
I would love a discussion on the blessing pills, Ngakpa!
