Mahasiddhas Virupa, Kanha, Damarupa & Avadhutipa

The artist appears to have taken Kanha’s name literally and depicts him as dark blue in color, which is somewhat amusing.

It is interesting that Avadhutipa is portrayed as being the only yogin not wearing large kanphata-style kundalas (ie they are rather small) and that his jata-juta (dreadlock-topknot) is unadorned.

However, he does appear to be wearing the typical kapalika-mudras (bone-ornaments) as are the rest of the yogins. He is also holding a kapala (skull cup) as are the others with he exception of Virupa. Virupa’s flowery decorations are more characteristic of pasupatas.

Saiva influence seems pervasive in mahasiddha iconography and no-doubt points to borrowing of Saivist elements within the Yogini-tantra traditions.
